Varithena
Varithena® Microfoam Treatment
A gentle, non-thermal injectable microfoam that treats varicose veins caused by problems in the great saphenous vein (GSV) system. Delivered with just one or two needle sticks under ultrasound guidance, Varithena closes diseased veins, improves symptoms such as aching, heaviness, and swelling, and enhances the appearance of visible varicosities—with minimal downtime.
What to Expect with Varithena® Treatment
Varithena is a quick, minimally invasive in-office procedure that uses a special prescription microfoam to close diseased varicose veins. Most treatments take less than one hour, require only one or two needle sticks, and allow patients to return to normal activities the same day.
Before the Procedure
Your doctor will review your medical history and perform an ultrasound to map the veins that need treatment.
No special preparation is usually required. You may eat and take your regular medications (including blood thinners) unless instructed otherwise.
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. You will change into disposable shorts provided by the office.
The treatment area will be cleaned, and a small amount of local anesthetic may be used to numb the injection site.
During the Procedure
You remain awake and comfortable the entire time.
Using ultrasound guidance, your physician injects a small amount of Varithena microfoam into the diseased vein through a tiny needle or catheter (typically just 1–2 sticks).
The foam gently fills the vein, causing it to collapse and seal shut. Blood is naturally redirected to healthy nearby veins.
The procedure is usually completed in under an hour. Most patients report little to no discomfort.
After the Procedure
You will be monitored briefly (about 10 minutes) for any rare allergic reactions.
Compression bandages and stockings are applied to the treated leg. Keep the bandages dry and in place for 48 hours, then wear the compression stockings for two weeks as directed.
You will be asked to walk for at least 10 minutes right after treatment and continue short daily walks (at least 10 minutes a day) for the next month.
Most people return to light daily activities the same day. Avoid heavy exercise and prolonged sitting or standing for one week.
Mild bruising, tenderness, or a feeling of tightness in the leg is common and typically improves within a few days to two weeks.
Follow-up ultrasound is usually scheduled to confirm the treated vein has closed successfully. Additional treatment sessions are occasionally needed depending on the number and size of veins.
Important notes:
Results vary. Varithena improves both the symptoms (aching, heaviness, swelling) and appearance of varicose veins for most patients. As with any procedure, discuss potential risks and benefits with your physician.
