Whether the cardiologist sees you in the office or in the hospital, he or she will review your medical history and perform a physical examination which may include checking your blood pressure, weight, heart, lungs, and blood vessels. Some problems may be diagnosed by your symptoms and the doctor’s findings when you are examined. You may need additional tests such as an ECG, x-ray, or blood test. Other problems will require more specialized testing. Your cardiologist may recommend lifestyle changes or medicine. Each patient’s case is unique.

Dr. Akash Patel is a board-eligible cardiologist who grew up in the St. Petersburg area. After graduating from the International Baccalaureate program at St. Petersburg High school, he completed his undergraduate studies at Washington University in St. Louis with majors in Biology and History. He then attended medical school at the University of Florida College of Medicine and subsequently completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. During residency he became interested in cardiology through his research with the division of Heart Failure, and was published in Circulation, JAMA Cardiology, and the Journal of Cardiac Failure. He was then accepted to the Cardiology fellowship at Boston Medical Center and completed his training there in June 2018, after which he returned to St. Petersburg to join Bay Area Heart Center.
