Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT)
In endovenous laser therapy (EVLT), also referred to as thermal or radiofrequency ablation, a thin laser fiber is inserted into the diseased vein, generally through a small puncture in the leg above where the visual symptoms appear. The physician then delivers laser energy through the fiber which heats the vein walls and causes the vein to close as the fiber is gradually removed. No longer able to carry blood, the diseased vein collapses, breaks up, and is naturally reabsorbed by the body over time.
Benefits & What to Expect:
- In-Office Procedure: EVLT is performed entirely in our clinic rooms under local tumescent anesthesia. The cut where the catheter was inserted is extremely small and does not require stitches.
- Speed: The procedure usually takes less than one hour, and you can likely go home the same day.
- Immediate Mobility: You are encouraged and expected to walk immediately following the procedure. Most patients report little to no pain associated with the recovery, and can return to work within a day.
- Loose Clothing: Please bring loose-fitting clothing to wear right after your surgery to accommodate the compression wrap.
